Necessity Is A Powerful ForceOne of my earliest memories of my great grandma was seeing her send a regular letter to her childhood friend in Italy. This practice started in the early days of World War II when her friend lost her husband and had three children and little money. So these tragic events created ingenuity and creativity. She could not accept that her friend and her children were suffering and went about crafting a solution. My great grandma decided to send money to her friend but it was the way she did it that was most fascinating to my young mind, US Postage Stamps. She was not wealthy but doing ok and was able to send a few pennies to a few dollars in stamps placed inside of the envelope of the letter. In that era, US Postage could be considered as a currency and in war torn areas it traded at many times premium to local currency and even US dollars. She later got just about all the women she knew in the little Italy section of Newark, New Jersey to participate.
My great grandma's friend made it through quite well and she continued the practice till her latest days. Later on she traded for foods and other things from her home country. She even sent postage to authors of books she enjoyed and photographers of great magazine pictures. It was not much but the thought was really beautiful
This was an amazing creation of a defacto currency and today this idea has more relevance then ever.
The cost for my great Grandma to send money was the postage and it was a cent or two. Today there exists the possibility to send money to anyone with fees close to $0.
The Power Of A Penny The greater possibility is the prospect of sending very small amounts, perhaps a penny. This in my view could change the entire infrastructure of world economy and create business models that could never have existed. Of course there are ways to send dollars, just not effcient ways to send pennies. It is the insignificance of the amount that is the most powerful aspect. If there are no barriers and little to no cost, this currency would flow in a very natural process enriching the recipient to the extent that it would not only a vote of reenforcement of the work they do and the service they perform, but to actually help fund the work.
The power to send a penny to anyone in my view is a revolution.
A QuestionI ask all of my friends here on Quora, how do you see the free flow of pennies changing the world?
